Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 10, 2026
Maxwell ("Maxwell," "we," "us," or "our") is an AI-assisted writing tool for professionals. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use Maxwell, how we use it, and the choices you have.
The short version: we collect only what we need to run the service. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not use third-party analytics or tracking.
Information we collect
Account information from Google
You sign in to Maxwell with your Google account. We receive and store your name, email address, and profile photo from Google. We request only the basic sign-in scopes (OpenID, email, and profile) — we do not request access to your Gmail, Drive, Calendar, contacts, or any other Google data.
Profile and context you provide
To ground AI suggestions in your voice, you may provide professional context such as your role, company, audience, writing goals, and voice preferences.
Your content
Maxwell stores the content you create and upload, including documents and their version history, comments, chat conversations with the AI assistant, and reference files you upload to your context library (plain text, Markdown, PDF, or Word documents up to 20 MB).
API keys
Maxwell's AI features run on an Anthropic API key that you or your team provide. Keys are encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM and are decrypted only on our servers to make AI requests on your behalf.
Security audit logs
We keep an internal log of security-relevant account actions (such as sign-ins, document creation and deletion, and API key changes) to protect the service and investigate abuse.
Google user data
Maxwell's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use your Google account information solely to authenticate you and display your name and photo within the app. We never sell it, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties except as needed to operate the service (for example, storing it in our database).
How we use your information
- To provide the service: storing and syncing your documents, powering the editor, and managing your account.
- To ground AI features in your voice: your profile context and content inform the suggestions, feedback, and edits the AI produces.
- To keep the service healthy: rate limiting, abuse prevention, and security auditing.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use your data for advertising, and we do not run third-party analytics or tracking on Maxwell.
AI processing
When you use AI features (chat, inline edits, feedback comments, or voice analysis), the relevant content — such as your document text, selected passages, chat messages, and uploaded reference material — is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate a response, using the API key you or your team provided. Under Anthropic's commercial API terms, content sent via the API is not used to train Anthropic's models. AI features run only when you invoke them.
Service providers
We use a small number of infrastructure providers to run Maxwell. Each processes data only to provide their service to us:
- Google — sign-in (OAuth).
- Anthropic — AI model responses.
- Vercel — application hosting and private file storage for uploaded reference files.
- Neon — database hosting.
- Upstash — rate limiting.
- Google Fonts — font delivery.
Teams
If you join a team, team administrators can see your name and email address as part of managing membership. Your documents remain private to you — teammates and admins cannot read them.
Cookies
Maxwell uses only essential cookies: a session cookie to keep you signed in and a preference cookie to remember your theme choice. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete individual documents, uploaded files, writing profiles, custom skills, and stored API keys at any time from within the app; deleting a document also deletes its versions, comments, and chat history. To delete your entire account and all associated data, email us at support@maxwelleditor.com and we will process the deletion promptly.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your data: all traffic is encrypted in transit with TLS, API keys are encrypted at rest, uploaded files are stored with private access, and access to production systems is restricted. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard practices.
Children
Maxwell is not directed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you within the app. Continued use of Maxwell after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
